LUCI fellows are accomplished researchers within defense laboratories who seek to collaborate with prominent DOD-funded academic researchers – either recipients of the Vannevar Bush Faculty Fellowship or principal/co-principal investigators under the Multi-Disciplinary University Research Initiative.

Fiscal Year 2023 Research Funding Awards

The DoD announced $220 million in awards for basic research projects as part of the Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) Program. At an average award amount of $7.1 million over five years, these competitive grants will support 31 teams located at 61 U.S. academic institutions, subject to satisfactory research progress and the availability of funds.

Howard University as the first HBCU to lead a University Affiliated Research Center

The Department of the Air Force has selected Howard University as the first Historically Black College or University to lead a University Affiliated Research Center. The center will be focused on tactical autonomy technology for military systems and Howard University will receive $12 million per year for five years to fund research, faculty, and students.

Department of Defense Announces 2022 Class of Laboratory-University Collaboration Initiative Fellows

The DoD announced today the 2022 class of Laboratory-University Collaboration Initiative (LUCI) Fellows. The LUCI Fellowship program supports collaboration between DoD laboratory scientists and DoD-funded academics, such as recipients of the Vannevar Bush Faculty Fellowship or Principal Investigators (PIs) of a Multi-Disciplinary University Research Initiative award.

Department of Defense Announces Fiscal Year 2021 Defense Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (DEPSCoR) Awards

The DoD announced today $14.6 million in DEPSCoR awards to 23 collaborative teams following two FY2021 competitions. DEPSCoR is a capacity-building program that is designed to strengthen the basic research infrastructure at institutions of higher education in under-utilized states/territories.
