Vannevar Bush Faculty Fellow, Prof. Tuomas Sandholm, has received the prestigious Alfred Kordelin Prize for AI for Societal Good!
This honor recognizes his groundbreaking work at the intersection of artificial intelligence, economics, and operations research, which is delivering real-world benefits to society.
Prof. Sandholm's contributions, including developing AI algorithms that power the national kidney exchange program in the US (saving countless lives!), exemplify the impact of basic research on solving critical challenges. Since 2010 his algorithm has run the national kidney exchange program in the US. He has created AI that finds the optimal combination of exchange chains and clusters of donor-patient-pairs in which the donor and patient are not compatible in terms of blood or tissue type. His algorithm has saved numerous human lives and has also been applied to other organ transplants.
His work aligns perfectly with the VBFF program's mission to support transformative, high-risk basic research that can lead to revolutionary new capabilities for national defense and civilian applications. Prof. Sandholm is one of the leading researchers in his fields and he has published over five hundred peer-reviewed articles. He has also received a number of highly commended awards, including the AI for the Benefit of Humanity award granted by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI).
The Alfred Kordelinin säätiö / Alfred Kordelin Foundation created this prize to recognize individuals at the forefront of culture, education, and science.
We are proud to support Professor Sandholm's innovative research and his dedication to using AI for the common good. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition!
